The only birch native to the southern lowlands, river birch combines spectacular salmon-pink to cinnamon exfoliating bark, dramatic stream-bank ecology, and the rare ability among birches to thrive through Tulsa-zone summer heat. A multi-trunk specimen along an Oklahoma creek can reach 60 ft with smooth scrolls of papery bark unwinding from its trunks — a uniquely sculptural native tree. Naturally resistant to the bronze birch borer that devastates planted paper and white birches in the south, river birch is the only birch worth planting in NE Oklahoma.

Salmon-pink, cinnamon, or reddish-brown to creamy-buff bark exfoliating in papery curling scrolls on younger trunks and limbs. Unique among NE Oklahoma trees and unmistakable from a distance — no other native tree has the warm pink-cinnamon peel. Older trunk bases (over 40–50 years) develop dark-grey, ridged, fissured platey bark; the youthful peel persists on upper trunks and limbs throughout life.
Alternate, simple, 2–3 in long, rhombic-ovate to triangular, with a wedge-shaped base, sharply pointed tip, and doubly serrate margins. Glossy medium green above, paler below with hairy veins. Fall color is a soft yellow — pleasant but not spectacular by hardwood standards. Leaves are smaller and finer-textured than most native canopy hardwoods, giving the species a delicate appearance.
Wind-pollinated. Male catkins 2–3 in long, yellow-brown, present through winter and elongating in spring; female catkins shorter and erect. Bloom in March before leaf-out. Fruit is a 1–1 1/2 in cylindrical "cone" releasing tiny winged samaras in May–June — an important early-summer food source for songbirds.
Most often multi-trunk (3–5 stems) when grown as ornamental or self-seeded along stream banks; nursery "single-stem" forms also available. Crown is open, somewhat pyramidal when young, becoming oval to rounded. Branches are slightly weeping at the tips, giving the tree a graceful, light habit. Reaches 40–70 ft over 40–75 years.
Betula nigra is the only birch native to the southern lowland U.S., and reaches its western range edge in eastern Oklahoma. Native populations in NE OK are concentrated along perennial stream and river banks: the Illinois River corridor in Cherokee and Adair counties, Spavinaw and Flint Creeks, the lower Verdigris and Caney drainages, the Mountain Fork in McCurtain County, and scattered along smaller perennial creeks across the Ozark Plateau, Ouachita Mountains, and the floor of the Cross Timbers ecotone.
Native habitat is moist to wet alluvial soils on stream banks, point bars, riparian terraces, and the edges of oxbow lakes. The species tolerates extended seasonal flooding (weeks at a time) and saturated soils — a riparian specialization shared with eastern cottonwood, sycamore, and black willow. It does not naturally occur on uplands.
In Tulsa-area landscape use, river birch has become one of the most planted ornamental shade trees due to the bark display and borer-resistance — but it has narrow site requirements: moist, acidic soil is essential. On Tulsa's high-pH alluvial clays it commonly develops manganese-deficiency chlorosis (interveinal yellowing) within 5–10 years. On well-drained acidic loam in irrigated landscapes it performs spectacularly. Avoid planting on raw upland clay or alkaline sites.

Betula nigra is the only commonly planted birch species naturally resistant to bronze birch borer (Agrilus anxius), the wood-boring beetle that has decimated paper birch (B. papyrifera) and European white birch (B. pendula) plantings across the lower Midwest and South. Resistance is not absolute under severe drought stress, but is robust under reasonable management. This single trait makes river birch the only birch worth planting south of central Missouri.
Doug Tallamy lists Betula as one of the top Lepidoptera host genera in the eastern U.S. (300+ species nationwide). In NE OK, river birch supports caterpillars of mourning cloak butterfly, dreamy duskywing skipper, and a substantial list of native silk moths including polyphemus, luna, cecropia, and imperial moths.
Wintering pine siskins, redpolls, goldfinches, and chickadees consume seed from the persistent catkins through winter. Older mature trees with heart rot at branch junctions provide cavity nesting sites for woodpeckers, chickadees, titmice, and prothonotary warblers (where moist riparian habitat persists).
River birch has a broad, shallow root system that binds alluvial sediment and resists erosion during flood events. The species is recommended in NRCS riparian restoration plantings along NE OK streams alongside black willow, sycamore, and cottonwood. Leaf litter is high-quality detritus that supports aquatic invertebrate communities downstream.
Match the species to acidic moist soil. The single most common landscape failure of river birch in NE Oklahoma is iron / manganese chlorosis on high-pH alluvial clay sites. Soil-test before planting; if pH is above 7.0, plant something else (e.g. swamp white oak, baldcypress, or American elm) rather than fight a perpetual chlorosis battle.

Plant container-grown stock October through April while dormant. Bare-root stock should be planted in mid-winter only. The species establishes quickly when planted dormant; summer planting is high-risk on anything but irrigated, well-mulched sites.
Even mature river birch in Tulsa landscapes needs supplemental irrigation during severe summer drought (e.g. the 2011, 2012, 2022, 2023 droughts). Deep watering once monthly through July, August, and September is sufficient on otherwise healthy trees. Stressed trees lose borer resistance and become vulnerable to subsequent attack.
On marginal alkaline sites, interveinal yellowing of new growth is the first warning. Treat with chelated iron (EDDHA-form for high-pH sites) applied as a soil drench in early spring, plus elemental sulfur to slowly lower soil pH around the root zone. Severe cases require trunk injection, which is a temporary fix — the long-term solution is to replace the tree with a species tolerant of the local pH.

From seed: easy — collect ripe samaras in early summer, sow immediately on moist medium, do not let dry out, germination within 2 weeks at 70 °F. From cuttings: softwood cuttings root readily under mist; commercial production for cultivars uses this method. From layering: low branches root naturally where they touch moist soil.
River birch has limited material wood-use historically — the wood is soft, light, weak, and not durable in contact with soil — but the species has substantial ornamental, riparian-restoration, and modest ethnobotanical roles.
