The eastern cottonwood is the giant of the prairie river bottom — the fastest-growing native shade tree in NE Oklahoma, the dominant canopy of the Arkansas, Verdigris, Caney and Cimarron floodplains, and the tree whose triangular heart-shaped leaves flutter audibly in the slightest breeze on a hot summer afternoon. Lewis & Clark traveled by it and built canoes from it; the Plains tribes navigated by its column on the horizon; and 150 years later it still defines the riparian forests of the southern Plains. A 60–100 ft dioecious tree that releases the cottony airborne seeds — from female trees only — that name the species, it is one of the few NE OK natives that can put on a serviceable shade canopy in just 10 years. Site it carefully — it is a riparian tree, not a small-yard tree — and it is one of the most generous trees you can plant.

A large, fast-growing deciduous tree, typically 60– 100 ft tall in NE Oklahoma with a single straight trunk and a broad, spreading, somewhat irregular crown of upswept and arching limbs. Young bark is smooth, yellowish-green to gray; mature bark becomes deeply furrowed into thick gray ridges with broad flat-topped intervening fissures — the diagnostic look of every old riverbottom tree across the southern Plains. Trunks of old specimens regularly reach 4–5 ft in diameter; the largest documented Oklahoma trees exceed 6 ft DBH.
The species name says it: leaves are deltoid (triangular), 3–6 in long, with a flat or shallowly heart-shaped base, a sharp apex, and coarsely serrated margins. The diagnostic feature is the laterally flattened petiole: hold a leaf flat in your hand, and the petiole is squashed perpendicular to the leaf blade. This anatomy causes the leaves to twist and flutter constantly in the slightest breeze — the audible "shimmer" of a riverbottom cottonwood grove on a hot afternoon is one of the characteristic sounds of NE OK summer. Fall color is a clean clear yellow.
Cottonwood is dioecious: male and female catkins grow on separate trees, opening in March before leaf-out. Male catkins are 3– 4 in, dense, red, releasing windborne pollen. Female catkins (only on female trees) elongate after pollination into pendulous strings of small green capsules; capsules ripen in May–June and split to release thousands of tiny seeds, each attached to a tuft of long white silky hairs. These airborne tufts are the "cotton", and they can drift miles in May breezes — a temporary nuisance, not a long-term problem. Male trees produce no cotton.
Two subspecies converge in NE Oklahoma: P. deltoides ssp. deltoides (eastern cottonwood, the dominant form east of Tulsa) and ssp. monilifera (plains cottonwood, more common from the Cimarron west to the High Plains). The plains form has slightly smaller leaves with fewer marginal teeth; the two forms hybridize freely in the Arkansas River valley. Distinguish from cousins: black willow (Salix nigra) has narrow lance-shaped leaves; black poplar / Lombardy poplar (Populus nigra) has narrow upright form, smaller diamond leaves; quaking aspen (P. tremuloides) does not occur in OK at all.
Eastern cottonwood is the dominant riparian canopy tree across NE Oklahoma's major river systems — the Arkansas, Verdigris, Caney, Neosho, Illinois and Bird Creek. Its preferred habitat is active floodplain: seasonally flooded alluvial soils with a shallow water table, regular sediment deposition from spring rises, and full sun on disturbed sandbars. A classic cottonwood gallery forest in the bottoms below Keystone Lake or along the Verdigris below Inola is dominated by mature cottonwood with an understory of black willow, green ash and box elder, plus an herbaceous layer of giant ragweed, smartweed and riverbank rye.
The species is a textbook pioneer: cottonwood seeds are tiny, shortlived (1–2 weeks of viability), and require a specific combination of fresh moist mineral soil and full sun to germinate — conditions normally provided only by spring flood scour on a sandbar. Once established, a cottonwood seedling can grow 4–6 ft in its first year, racing to put its crown above competitors before the floodplain succession overtakes it. Across NE Oklahoma, however, dam-controlled rivers (Keystone, Oologah, Hulah, Birch) have largely ended the natural flood pulses that recruit new cottonwood cohorts — many existing gallery forests are even-aged stands recruited before dam closure and not regenerating. Cottonwood is therefore locally common today but slowly declining as a riparian dominant on managed stretches of Oklahoma rivers.

Cottonwood is the structural backbone of healthy NE OK floodplains: deep root systems stabilize banks against the full force of Arkansas-River spring rises, fallen leaves and woody debris feed the aquatic food web, shade lowers stream temperature, and the high vertical structure of mature trees provides nest sites for canopy-nesting birds. A single mature cottonwood can transpire over 100 gallons of water per day in midsummer, moving floodplain shallow groundwater into the atmosphere — a major component of the southern Plains regional hydrologic cycle.
Among the most important Lepidoptera host trees in the eastern US: documented larval host of the viceroy butterfly (Limenitis archippus), tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus), mourning cloak (Nymphalis antiopa), red-spotted purple, several underwing moths (Catocala), and a striking number of sphinx moths including the twin-spotted sphinx and big poplar sphinx (Pachysphinx modesta). Cottonwood, willow and birch together support some of the highest Lepidoptera diversity of any North American tree group.
Cottonwood is the preferred food and dam-construction tree of North American beaver across most of the species' range, including the NE OK river system. Mature trees with hollows are major cavity-nest sites for wood ducks, screech owls, raccoons, gray squirrels and pileated woodpeckers. Bald eagles wintering along the Arkansas River below Keystone Dam preferentially perch and roost in tall cottonwoods — the eagle-watching season in Tulsa County is essentially a cottonwood phenomenon.
Cottonwood is fast-growing soft wood and accumulates a long pest list. Cytospora canker (Valsa sordida) attacks stressed trees; Marssonina leaf spot defoliates in wet springs; cottonwood leaf beetle, poplar tent caterpillar and cottonwood borer all feed but rarely kill mature trees. Old riparian cottonwoods are inherently fragile — large limbs drop unpredictably in summer storms. This is why they should not be planted over a house, parking pad, or play area.

Container or B&B stock plants best in fall (October–November) or in late winter / early spring before bud break. Cottonwood roots strongly the first year on a moist site and is very forgiving of transplant. Bare-root cuttings are also widely used: dormant 1–2 ft hardwood cuttings stuck directly into moist alluvial soil in late winter root readily without rooting hormone — the traditional way to establish a riparian planting on rural land.
Cottonwood grows fast and develops weak branch attachments — the price of the species' growth rate. Structural pruning in the first 5–10 years pays large dividends for safety and longevity: select 4–6 well-spaced scaffold limbs; remove co-dominant leaders before they become structural problems; thin the crown lightly to reduce wind sail. Mature trees should be inspected by a certified arborist every 2–3 years for storm risk, especially if sited near a structure or driveway. Do not top cottonwood — topping ruins form and stimulates the worst kind of weak resprout growth.

Cottonwood is one of the most culturally important trees of the central Plains and the historical American river bottom — equal parts navigational landmark, construction material, and ceremonial center.
