The largest native willow in North America and the dominant streambank tree of NE Oklahoma's small to mid-sized rivers — the Verdigris, Caney, Grand, Illinois, and the smaller tributaries of the Arkansas. A fast-growing, short-lived, dioecious tree of bare-soil sandbars and recently-flooded river terraces, black willow is one of the first species to colonize disturbed wet ground and one of the most reliable streambank stabilizers available. Its yellow-green pollen catkins in late March produce the earliest substantial pollinator nectar flow of the year in the Tulsa region — critical fuel for emerging queen bumblebees and overwintered honey bees.

A medium tree, typically 30–60 ft tall in NE Oklahoma with a frequently multi-stemmed leaning trunk and an irregular open crown. Old riverbank trees often arch dramatically over the water with one or more leaders nearly horizontal. Bark on mature trees is the strong field mark: dark brown to nearly black, deeply furrowed into shaggy, scaly, interlacing ridges — conspicuously darker than other regional willows. Twigs are slender, brittle at the base (a diagnostic feature: black willow twigs snap off cleanly with a finger flick), reddish-brown to yellow-green when young.
Simple, alternate, narrowly lanceolate, 3–6 in long and only 0.4–0.8 in wide — the highest length-to-width ratio of any native eastern tree. Margins are finely serrate; both surfaces are bright green (only slightly paler beneath, unlike many other willows that have strikingly silvery undersides). Stipules are conspicuous, leafy, and persistent on vigorous shoots — another diagnostic field mark separating S. nigra from most other native willows. Fall color is yellow-green, often dropping with the first frost.
Strictly dioecious: male and female catkins on separate trees, appearing with the new leaves in late March or early April (slightly later than the leafless-stage flowering of pussywillows). Male catkins are yellow-green, 1–3 in long, conspicuously stamened; female catkins are slimmer and greener. Both produce abundant nectar from floral nectaries — critical for emerging queen bumblebees in early spring. Female catkins mature in 4–6 weeks into capsules releasing tiny cotton-tufted seeds in late April/May; seeds are viable only a few days after release and must land on bare wet soil immediately.
Easily confused with several other native and non-native willows. Salix amygdaloides (peachleaf willow) is the closest native lookalike but has broader ovate-lanceolate leaves with strongly silvery undersides. Salix babylonica (introduced weeping willow) has the unmistakable pendulous branchlets. Salix interior (sandbar willow) is shrubby, much smaller, with even narrower leaves. Salix exigua is rare in eastern OK. The big diagnostic for black willow is the combination of: dark furrowed bark, very narrow lanceolate leaves green on both sides, persistent leafy stipules, and brittle twig bases.
Black willow is widespread along virtually every river, creek, and large drainage in NE Oklahoma. It is the dominant streambank tree of the Verdigris, Caney, Grand, Illinois, Mountain Fork, and most tributaries of the Arkansas River. Look for it on freshly deposited sandbars, river-edge mudflats, beaver-pond margins, seasonally flooded floodplains, and constructed pond and reservoir shores within 2–5 years of disturbance. Older, stable streambanks tend to lose black willow to longer-lived bottomland species (sycamore, cottonwood, river birch) within 40–60 years.
Black willow is a phreatophyte: it depends on continuous access to a shallow water table. The reason it grows on sandbars and along stream edges is not primarily a tolerance for inundation but a need for permanent saturated soil below the root zone. On normal upland soil it will die in the first severe drought. This makes it a poor choice for typical landscape plantings and an excellent choice for streambank restoration, retention pond margins, rain gardens with year-round seepage, and constructed wetland bioswales.
Pre-settlement, black willow was a critical component of the shifting riparian mosaic of the Arkansas River valley. The tree's reproductive strategy is keyed to spring flood pulses: floods scour bare sandbars, recede in late April just as seeds release, and willow germinates on wet bare sand in dense stands. Channel stabilization, dam construction (Keystone, Oologah, Skiatook, Hudson), and bank armoring have reduced the natural disturbance regime, but the tree remains abundant wherever small free-flowing water systems persist in the region.

Black willow catkins in late March/early April produce the first major nectar and pollen flow of the year in NE Oklahoma — an absolutely critical resource for emerging queen bumblebees (Bombus pensylvanicus, B. impatiens, B. griseocollis), early solitary bees including the willow specialists Andrena erythrogaster and A. bisalicis, and overwintered honey bee colonies coming out of winter. Tulsa-area beekeepers can routinely add a willow-flow super to strong colonies in early April. Other pollinators include the mourning cloak butterfly (often the first butterfly on the wing), syrphid flies, and various small beetles.
The genus Salix is the second most important lepidoptera host plant genus in North America after Quercus, supporting approximately 450 species of butterflies and moths. Specialists on willow in NE Oklahoma include the mourning cloak (Nymphalis antiopa), viceroy (Limenitis archippus), red-spotted purple (L. arthemis astyanax), several giant silkmoths including the cecropia (Hyalophora cecropia) and polyphemus (Antheraea polyphemus), and dozens of underwing and prominent moths.
Black willow's dense fibrous root system and ability to root from cuttings or buried branches makes it the standard riparian-restoration species of the central US. NRCS streambank-stabilization specifications routinely call for willow brush layering, post planting, or live staking along eroding banks — cuttings 1.5–2 in diameter and 3–5 ft long inserted into the bank in winter root readily and form a dense vegetative mat within two growing seasons.
Black willow is the primary food and dam-building material of the American beaver (Castor canadensis), now expanding back across NE Oklahoma after a century of low populations. Beaver-cut willow regrows vigorously from the stump — a sustainable feeding-and-coppicing relationship. Overhanging willow branches provide shade for warmwater fish (smallmouth bass, sunfish, channel cat) and drop terrestrial insects to the water column. Cavities in old willow trunks host wood ducks, screech owls, and bats.

Black willow is the right choice for: active streambank stabilization, retention pond and detention basin margins, permanently moist rain gardens and bioswales, restoration of disturbed riparian sites, early-spring native pollinator gardens on adequate moisture, and educational plantings demonstrating dioecy or willow ecology. It is wrong for: ordinary lawn and yard plantings, anywhere within 30 ft of foundations, septic, or sewer lines, and any consistently dry site.
Black willow tolerates aggressive coppicing on a 3–7 year rotation and resprouts vigorously from the stump. Traditional managed coppice systems produce small-diameter willow rod for basketry, biofuel, and bank-armoring brush bundles. For landscape and streambank trees, periodic removal of dead leaders and damaged limbs is usually all that is needed; the tree's natural form is irregular and full pruning attempts are usually counterproductive. Avoid working on saturated soil to prevent compaction.
Black willow is a wild-only species with no significant horticultural cultivars in trade. Use locally collected cuttings for streambank work; the genetic diversity of a wild population produces more resilient plantings than any clonal cultivar would. For pure ornamental use, choose a different willow species (Salix purpurea 'Nana', S. integra 'Hakuro Nishiki', or the native S. discolor pussywillow) instead. The Plant Materials Centers of the NRCS occasionally release region-specific seed sources of S. nigra for restoration work; check with the Manhattan, KS or Knox City, TX PMC for current releases.
Black willow has had a quietly important utilitarian and medicinal record in eastern North America — almost always overshadowed by its European relatives but with a distinct American history.

Along a stream or seasonal floodplain, black willow pairs naturally with: american elderberry (Sambucus canadensis), cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis), eastern gamagrass (Tripsacum dactyloides), american hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana), black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa), and joe-pye weed (Eutrochium purpureum).
