Bald Cypress

Taxodium distichum

The astonishing deciduous conifer of the American southeast — a tree that drops its needles each fall the way a maple drops its leaves, that builds knee-high root projections in standing water, and that can live more than 2,600 years, making it among the oldest trees in eastern North America. Native to NE Oklahoma's southeastern bottomlands and Ouachita drainages, bald cypress is also one of the toughest, longest-lived ornamental trees you can plant in upland Tulsa-region clay — a counter-intuitive "swamp tree" that handles drought, ice storms, urban soils, and pollution with equanimity.

Identification

Habit, bark, & buttress

Tall, conical-when-young, becoming broad and flat-topped with great age. Trunk is straight with a notably fluted, buttressed, swollen base — pronounced in trees grown in saturated soil; subtle but still present on most upland plantings. Bark is fibrous, gray-brown to reddish-brown, peeling in long shreds and flat ridges. Above the buttress the trunk is straight and clear, rising 30–50 ft to the first major limbs in mature wild specimens.

Foliage — the deciduous conifer

The defining feature: soft, feathery, two-ranked needle-like leaves, 8–15 mm long, arranged flatly on slender deciduous lateral shoots that look like fern pinnae. The entire shoot — needles plus twig — is shed each fall, just as a deciduous angiosperm sheds its leaves — one of only a handful of deciduous conifers in the world (others include larch, dawn redwood, pondcypress, and the Chinese Glyptostrobus). Foliage emerges chartreuse in April, matures medium green, and turns a clean rust-orange to coppery-bronze in November before drop. The combination of cypress-like form and angiosperm-like leaf-drop is one of the most arresting things in autumn Tulsa landscapes.

Cones & knees

Monoecious; wind-pollinated. Tiny pollen cones in pendant clusters at branch tips in winter, shedding pollen in March. Female cones small, round, woody, 2–3.5 cm across, ripening September–November and breaking apart on the tree to release triangular winged seeds. "Cypress knees" — woody, conical projections rising vertically from the surface roots — form on trees standing in saturated or seasonally flooded soil and may rise 1–6 ft above the substrate. Their function has been debated for over a century — aeration and structural support are the leading hypotheses; recent work emphasizes their role as photosynthate storage and biomechanical anchoring on soft swamp substrates. Knees are uncommon to absent on dry-site plantings — a useful trait for street and lawn use.

Confusables

Easily distinguished from all evergreen conifers by the deciduous foliage and round cones. The closest look-alikes are pondcypress (Taxodium ascendens; sometimes treated as T. distichum var. imbricarium), which has appressed scale-like needles on upright shoots and a slimmer crown, and dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides), an Asian deciduous conifer of similar habit but with opposite (not alternate) needles and long-stalked oval-elongate cones. Larches (Larix) are cold-northern, tufted-needled, and not present in OK.

Habitat & Range in NE Oklahoma

Taxodium distichum reaches its native northwestern range limit in SE Oklahoma — the species is genuinely native in the swamp forests, oxbow lakes, and bottomland sloughs of McCurtain, Choctaw, and Pushmataha counties, with notable wild stands in the Little River, Mountain Fork, and Red River drainages and around the lower-elevation Ouachita backwaters. NE Oklahoma proper (Tulsa, Osage, Rogers, Tulsa, Wagoner, Cherokee counties) is just outside the native range, but the species thrives as a planted tree across all of NE Oklahoma and is now commonly seen in riparian restorations, urban parks, golf-course water hazards, retention basins, and increasingly in lawn and street plantings.

In its wild southeastern habitat, bald cypress is the dominant tree of blackwater swamps and slow river backwaters — the iconic landscape of the Atchafalaya, the Okefenokee, the Mississippi delta sloughs, and (closer to home) the Ouachita and Red River bottoms of southern Oklahoma and Arkansas. Stands typically experience extended seasonal flooding and produce knees in the saturated substrate. Critically for NE Oklahoma growers, the species is also one of the most climate-tough ornamental trees available, performing without irrigation on droughty Tulsa clay sites where one would never expect a "swamp tree" to survive.

Rookery & cavity tree

Old-growth swamp cypress are among the most important rookery trees in eastern North America — great blue heron, snowy egret, great egret, anhinga, and wood stork colonies cluster in the open flat tops of mature trees. Hollow trunks (which form readily as trees age) provide nest cavities for wood duck, hooded merganser, barred owl, and prothonotary warbler in our region's swamp habitats.

Seed crops & waterfowl

The seeds are eaten by wood ducks, mallards, wild turkey, and several species of squirrel. The cones break apart on the tree and release seeds onto floodwater for downstream dispersal — cypress is among the few conifers whose seeds are routinely water-dispersed, a key adaptation to its swamp habitat.

Longevity & climate record

Bald cypress is the longest-lived deciduous tree of eastern North America — a 2,624-year-old cypress was documented in the Black River swamp of NC in 2019, and individuals over 1,500 years old are known from multiple swamp systems. The annual growth rings of these ancient trees are one of the most important paleoclimate archives for the southeastern US, recording centuries of regional drought and flood history with remarkable resolution.

Wetland function

Cypress swamps are some of the highest-functioning natural water-quality treatment systems on Earth: they trap and process sediment, filter nutrients, store and slowly release floodwater, and sequester carbon in the deeply anoxic peaty substrate that builds beneath them over centuries. The Atchafalaya, Big Cypress, and lower Mississippi cypress swamps perform this work at landscape scale.

The "knee" question: If you plant bald cypress in a regularly wet site — pond edge, low spot, retention basin — expect knees within 5–15 years. They will not damage plumbing or foundations but they will absolutely break a lawnmower blade. Plant cypress in a low spot that you can mow around, not through. On dry upland Tulsa clay, knees rarely form — the tree's "swamp tree" identity is a function of substrate, not destiny.

When to plant

Container or B&B trees in late winter (February–March) before bud break, or fall (October–November). Bare-root in late winter only. Cypress establishes quickly in either upland or wetland sites once temperatures warm.

Bald cypress has a strong central leader and naturally develops good structure with little intervention. Light formative pruning in late winter to remove crossing or co-dominant leaders is enough. Avoid topping or major crown reduction — cypress wood is durable, but the natural form is the entire ornamental point of the tree.
