Watermelon is an African-origin annual cucurbit perfectly suited to the long, hot, humid summers of NE Oklahoma. Identification & Botany

Vine & leaves

Sprawling annual vine to 8–15 ft long, with hairy stems that creep along the ground rather than climbing. Leaves are alternately arranged, deeply palmately lobed with three to five lobes each further pinnately divided, giving an overall lacy or fern-like appearance — very different from the simpler unlobed cucumber leaf, the broad mostly-unlobed cantaloupe leaf, and the broad shallowly-lobed pumpkin leaf. Leaves are 4–8 in long, slightly fuzzy, on long petioles. Each leaf node bears a paired branched tendril used for anchoring on adjacent vegetation.

Flowers — the male/female distinction

Watermelon is monoecious — each plant produces separate male and female flowers on the same vine. Both are pale yellow, ~1 in across, with five fused petals. The male flowers appear first, in greater numbers, on long slender stalks, and lack any swelling at the base. The female flowers appear several days later, individually scattered along the vine, and are unmistakable for the swollen miniature watermelon at the base of the flower (the inferior ovary). Pollination by bees is required to set fruit — a female flower not pollinated within its single day of receptivity will yellow and drop without forming a melon.

Fruit anatomy

The fruit is botanically a pepo — a modified berry with a hard rind enclosing a fleshy interior. Watermelon fruit ranges from 3 to 80+ lb depending on variety, oblong to round, with an outer rind that may be solid dark green ('Sugar Baby', 'Black Diamond'), green-striped ('Crimson Sweet', 'Charleston Gray'), or speckled with yellow ('Moon and Stars'). The interior flesh is most commonly red-pink (lycopene-pigmented), but heirlooms include yellow ('Yellow Doll', 'Cream of Saskatchewan'), orange ('Orangeglo'), and white-fleshed varieties. Seeds in true heirlooms are large, dark, mature, and fully-formed; many modern hybrids are seedless triploids.

Citron & the genetics question

Citrullus lanatus as currently classified includes the sweet edible watermelon (C. lanatus var. lanatus) and the citron melon (C. lanatus var. citroides) — a related African form with bland white flesh historically used as livestock fodder, in preserves and pickles, and as a source of citron rind. Citron melons can cross-pollinate freely with sweet watermelons, contaminating heirloom seed lines, and they readily naturalize and persist as feral plants in OK pastures and roadsides — an important consideration for seed-saving growers.

Origin, Range & the Oklahoma Watermelon Tradition

Watermelon is not a North American native — recent genetic and archaeological evidence (a 5,000-year-old seed cache at the Uan Muhuggiag site in Libya, plus genome studies of wild relatives) places its domestication in NE Africa, most likely the Sudan–Egypt corridor, by approximately 4,000–5,000 years ago. The crop spread through the Mediterranean, into the Middle East and India during the classical era, and arrived in the Americas with European colonists and enslaved Africans in the 16th and 17th centuries. By the 18th and 19th centuries it had become a fully-established staple of southern US agriculture and is now grown in essentially every warm-summer region of the world.

Oklahoma's watermelon tradition is one of the deepest in the central US: Rush Springs in Grady County hosts the annual Watermelon Festival every August (since 1948); the watermelon is the official state vegetable of Oklahoma (designated by the legislature in 2007); and the sandy alluvial soils of the southwestern OK river valleys are nationally recognized as elite watermelon ground. NE Oklahoma is somewhat heavier-soiled than the Rush Springs district but is still excellent watermelon country — sandy loams along the Verdigris and Caney rivers, the Bartlesville and Bristow areas, and amended garden beds throughout the Tulsa metro all produce excellent crops in any normal summer.

Pollinator-dependent crop

Watermelon is one of the more pollinator-dependent crops in the home garden — female flowers are receptive for only a single day, and adequate fruit set typically requires 8–12 separate bee visits per female flower to deliver enough pollen for a fully-formed fruit. Inadequate pollination is the single most common cause of misshapen, lopsided, or early-aborted melons. The principal pollinators in NE Oklahoma are honeybees, native bumblebees (Bombus spp.), and squash bees (Peponapis pruinosa, Xenoglossa spp.) — the last group are cucurbit-specialists that emerge from underground nests precisely when squash and melon flowers open at dawn.

Supporting pollinators in the garden

To maximize watermelon set: avoid all neonicotinoid and pyrethroid pesticides anywhere near the cucurbit patch (these are systemic and translocate into nectar); plant a diverse pollinator buffer of aromatic aster, cosmos, sunflowers, and butterfly milkweed near the garden; and leave undisturbed bare-soil patches for ground-nesting squash bees.

The cucurbit pest complex

Major Oklahoma watermelon pests include the squash bug (Anasa tristis) which sucks sap and transmits cucurbit yellow vine disease; the striped cucumber beetle (Acalymma vittatum) and spotted cucumber beetle (Diabrotica undecimpunctata) which both transmit bacterial wilt; aphids as virus vectors; and cucurbit powdery mildew in late summer. Heirloom varieties tend to have moderate inherent disease resistance; row covers until flowering provides additional protection.

Three-sisters compatibility

Watermelon is fully compatible with the Indigenous three-sisters (corn, beans, squash) polyculture — effectively becoming a "fourth sister" alongside summer squash. The corn provides structure for pole beans; the beans fix nitrogen for the nitrogen-hungry corn and watermelon; the watermelon vines function as a sprawling living mulch suppressing weeds and cooling the soil. Spacing must be larger than for true squash polyculture — allow 8–10 ft between corn hills to give watermelon vines room to ramble.

Pollination test: If your female flowers are dropping without forming melons, hand-pollinate as a quick diagnostic — pick a freshly-opened male flower at dawn, peel back the petals, and rub the anther directly onto the stigma of an open female. If hand-pollinated flowers set fruit and bee-visited flowers do not, you have a pollinator deficit and should add habitat support and reduce any local pesticide use.

Site selection

Watermelons need full sun (8+ hours), warm well-drained soil (sandy loam ideal), and substantial space. Each plant needs roughly 25–50 sq ft of ground for a full-size variety (4–6 ft between plants and 6–10 ft between rows); icebox varieties like 'Sugar Baby' can be grown at half this spacing or even trellised on sturdy supports with fruit slings.
