Ohio Spiderwort opens a fresh trio of true-blue, three-petaled morning flowers daily from May through July, each bloom collapsing into a sticky drop of fluid by mid-afternoon as the next bud waits its turn. Glaucous, arching, grass-like foliage and clumping rhizomatous habit make it one of the easiest and most rewarding tallgrass-prairie natives for NE Oklahoma gardens — and the stamen hairs of its anthers are sensitive enough to ionizing radiation that Tradescantia has been used as a living biological dosimeter in laboratories around the world.

Erect to slightly arching herbaceous perennial 2–3 ft tall, growing in tight rhizomatous clumps. Stems are smooth, glaucous (waxy blue-green), and zigzag slightly at each node. Leaves are narrow, long-linear (8–15 in × 0.5–1 in wide), keeled, and folded along the midrib like a grass — but the base of each leaf sheaths the stem completely, a defining feature of the dayflower family. Snap a stem and a clear, slightly sticky mucilage drips out; this "spider-silk" sap is the source of one folk etymology for the common name.
Terminal umbel-like clusters of 6–30 buds opening one or two at a time. Each flower has three equal violet-blue petals (occasionally pink or white) about ¾–1½ in across, with six bright yellow anthers surrounded by a halo of fuzzy blue staminal hairs. Flowers open at dawn and collapse into a drop of sticky fluid by mid-afternoon — a single bloom lasts less than a day, but the cluster carries the flowering season for 6–10 weeks. Two leaf-like green bracts subtend each cluster.
Three-celled green capsules ripen tan-brown in mid- to late summer, each splitting to release 4–6 small dark seeds. Self-sows lightly in disturbed bare soil but is not aggressive. The plant spreads slowly by short rhizomes and by clump expansion; mature crowns develop a tough, fleshy white root system that drives drought tolerance and makes it nearly impossible to kill once established.
Most likely confused with the closely related Tradescantia bracteata (longbract spiderwort — smaller, hairier sepals, often shorter) and T. occidentalis (prairie spiderwort — western OK panhandle). The garden T. virginiana × hybrids of the Andersoniana group have broader leaves and hairier sepals. The unrelated Sisyrinchium (blue-eyed grass) has flat iris-like fans of leaves and tiny six-tepaled flowers in clusters — very different up close. The exotic Commelina communis (Asiatic dayflower) has only two showy blue petals and one tiny white one.
Ohio Spiderwort is one of the most reliably encountered native forbs across the tallgrass prairie, mixed-grass prairie, Cross Timbers savanna and oak-hickory edges of NE Oklahoma. Look for it on prairie remnants throughout the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Osage County, along railroad rights-of-way and unmowed roadsides from Tulsa east to Tahlequah, on glade edges in the western Ozarks, and increasingly as a volunteer in restored urban meadows along the Arkansas River corridor. It thrives on a wide range of soils — sandy Cross Timbers loams, the cherty rocky soils of Mayes and Cherokee counties, heavy Tulsa-area clays, and the alkaline limestone outcrops of the Verdigris valley.
Its preferred habitat is open to lightly shaded, periodically disturbed ground — prairie sites maintained by historic fire and grazing, roadside cuts, oak-savanna openings, and gravelly creek terraces. Spiderwort tolerates both periodic drought and brief flooding, but it goes summer-dormant (foliage tatters and yellows) during the long July–August heat that characterizes our region; this is normal and not a horticultural failure. New basal foliage often returns with the September rains.

Tradescantia flowers offer no nectar — only pollen — and are pollinated almost exclusively by long-tongued bees that practice buzz pollination (sonication). The principal visitors in NE Oklahoma are bumblebees (Bombus griseocollis, B. pensylvanicus, B. impatiens), leafcutter bees (Megachile), and several halictid sweat bees. Honey bees collect pollen but cannot effectively buzz the anthers and are minor visitors. The morning-only flowering window matches the daily foraging peak of native bumblebees.
Few specialist herbivores feed on spiderwort, but it is a documented host plant for the yellow woollybear caterpillar (Spilosoma virginica) and several leaf-feeding chrysomelid beetles in the genus Lema. Aphids occasionally cluster on flower stems and attract syrphid flies and lady beetles. The plant's mucilaginous sap likely deters many generalist chewers, contributing to its strong deer- and rabbit-resistance — a major asset in suburban Tulsa landscapes.
Forms a deep, fleshy root system that helps stabilize soil on disturbed sites and competes well with cool-season grasses without becoming weedy. A reliable matrix forb in tallgrass and mixed-grass prairie restorations, spiderwort fills the early-summer floral gap between spring ephemerals (e.g. wild hyacinth, prairie phlox) and the high-summer composites (coneflowers, blazing star). Its summer dormancy creates open canopy space exactly when warm-season grasses are surging.
The blue stamen hairs of Tradescantia are composed of single-cell files whose pigmentation mutates from blue to pink in response to ionizing radiation, certain mutagenic chemicals, and elevated ozone. The "Trad-SH" (stamen-hair) and "Trad-MCN" (micronucleus) bioassays developed in the 1960s–70s by Sadao Ichikawa and others use this trait to detect environmental mutagens; the assays remain in use for biomonitoring near nuclear facilities and industrial corridors.

Spiderwort is a foundational matrix plant for any NE Oklahoma prairie meadow, pollinator strip, native border, hellstrip, or low-input perennial bed. It is equally at home in formal cottage-garden settings (paired with peonies and irises, blooming the same week) and in restoration plantings on rocky waste ground. Use it where you want a tough, long-lived clump that needs no fertilizer and asks nothing of the gardener except an occasional shearing.
By mid- to late July, spiderwort foliage typically yellows and looks tatty as the plant enters summer dormancy. Cut the entire clump back to 2–3 inches with shears or a string trimmer immediately after the main bloom finishes. Within 2–3 weeks of cutback (or with the September rains) a flush of fresh basal foliage emerges, and a lighter second bloom often follows in September. This single annual chore is the secret to keeping spiderwort looking presentable in a designed garden setting.
Established clumps are easily divided in early spring or fall — lift the crown, slice the rhizome mass into fist-sized pieces, and replant. Self-sown seedlings transplant readily. Seed germinates best after 30–90 days of cold-moist stratification. Stem cuttings root in water within a week, a useful propagation trick borrowed from the closely related houseplant Tradescantia zebrina.
True Tradescantia ohiensis is sold by most native-plant nurseries in Oklahoma (Sunshine Nursery in Clinton, Wild Things Nursery, Prairie Moon seed) as the straight species. Most named Tradescantia garden cultivars (e.g. 'Sweet Kate', 'Concord Grape', 'Red Grape') are selections of the T. virginiana × hybrid complex (the Andersoniana group), not of T. ohiensis; they are showier in flower but less durable in our heat and longer-lived as garden plants only with consistent moisture. For native restoration work, always specify ecotypic, locally sourced seed — central-OK and tallgrass-prairie ecotypes adapt better than commercial seed grown in the upper Midwest.
Spiderwort sits at an unusual intersection of edible wild plant, traditional medicine, ornamental garden subject, and modern laboratory tool. Its mucilaginous tissues mean that almost every practical use of the plant ends up "slimy" — a feature, not a bug, in some recipes.
