Shagbark Hickory

Carya ovata

No North American tree has a bark like this. On a mature shagbark hickory the bark splits into long, narrow, foot-or-more strips that curl outward at top and bottom while remaining attached at the middle, giving the trunk the look of a half-shed cedar shake roof. Inside that exuberant bark lives one of the sweetest native nuts in eastern North America — rivaling pecan in flavor — and one of the longest-lived hardwoods of the climax oak-hickory forest that historically covered the Ozark and Ouachita uplands of NE Oklahoma. It is slow, deep-rooted, and worth the hundred-year commitment.

Identification

Bark — the unmistakable feature

On a young tree (under 8 in dbh) the bark is gray and smooth, indistinguishable from many other hickories. By 10–15 in dbh the diagnostic feature emerges: long vertical plates 1–3 ft long that curl away from the trunk at top and bottom while remaining attached in the middle, giving the trunk a "shaggy" appearance visible from a hundred yards. No other native tree in NE Oklahoma has this bark. The closely related shellbark hickory (C. laciniosa) of bottomland sites is similar but with longer, broader plates.

Leaves & Buds

Alternate, pinnately compound, 8–14 in long, with typically 5 leaflets (occasionally 7) — the terminal three leaflets are notably larger than the lower pair. Leaflets are ovate to obovate, 4–7 in long, with finely serrated margins. The terminal bud in winter is large (12–25 mm), oblong, with brown overlapping outer scales that fall away in spring to reveal pale yellow-green inner scales that flare back like flower petals — a striking and diagnostic spring sight. Crushed leaves are mildly aromatic.

Flowers & Nuts

Monoecious; wind-pollinated. Male flowers in slender drooping yellow-green catkins 4–5 in long; female flowers small, in 2–5 flowered terminal spikes. Nuts mature September–October enclosed in a thick (3–6 mm) 4-valved husk that splits cleanly to the base when ripe, releasing a four-ridged, cream-white, smooth-shelled nut roughly 1–1.5 in across. The kernel is sweet and high in fat — among the best-tasting native hickory nuts. Bears mast crops on roughly a 1–3 year cycle (heavy crop years alternating with poor years).

Confusables

Distinguished from other NE Oklahoma hickories by the bark and the 5-leaflet leaf:

  • Shellbark (C. laciniosa): also shaggy, but 7-leafleted and on wetter bottomland sites; nuts larger.
  • Mockernut (C. tomentosa): tight blocky bark; 7–9 hairy leaflets; thick-shelled nuts.
  • Bitternut (C. cordiformis): yellow sulfur winter buds; 7–9 leaflets; bitter inedible nut.
  • Pignut (C. glabra): tight smooth bark; 5–7 leaflets; small pear-shaped nut.
  • Pecan (C. illinoinensis): bottomland tree; 9–17 leaflets; the famous oblong nut.

Habitat & Range in NE Oklahoma

Shagbark hickory reaches its western range limit in eastern Oklahoma, where it is a characteristic component of the climax oak-hickory forest of the Ozark Highlands (Adair, Cherokee, Delaware, Sequoyah counties), the Ouachita Mountains (Le Flore, McCurtain), and the eastern fringes of the Cross Timbers from Tulsa east. It is uncommon in the western Cross Timbers and absent from the western half of the state. Within the Tulsa metro it is scattered on the sandstone ridges and wooded slopes of Turkey Mountain, Mohawk Park, and the Osage Hills, often in association with white oak, post oak, black oak, and northern red oak.

Ecologically, shagbark is a slow-growing, long-lived, climax-forest species — the opposite of the pioneer redcedar or roughleaf dogwood. It establishes most reliably under the partial shade of an existing canopy, sends down a deep taproot in its first three years (often putting nearly all early-life energy into roots while the shoot stays small), and can take 40+ years to begin producing nut crops from seed. Because of this slow nut-bearing onset and the deep taproot that makes mature trees essentially impossible to transplant, shagbark is best planted as a small seedling and considered an investment for the next generation of the property.

Mast & Mammals

Hickory nuts are a foundational fall mast crop for the eastern oak-hickory forest. Eastern gray squirrel and fox squirrel are the primary dispersers in NE Oklahoma; chipmunks, white-footed mice, eastern cottontail, raccoons, and white-tailed deer all consume the nuts. Black bears, where they occur in the Ouachitas, take nuts heavily. Wild turkey and wood duck both consume fallen nuts in the bottoms. Squirrel caching is the primary mechanism by which hickory recolonizes forest gaps.

Cavity nesting & bat roosts

The exfoliating shaggy bark creates year-round roosting habitat under the loose plates — this is documented as the primary maternity-colony roost tree for the federally endangered Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis) and an important roost for the threatened northern long-eared bat (M. septentrionalis) across their ranges. Even where these bats do not occur, big brown, evening, and red bats roost behind shagbark plates. Mature hollow trunks host pileated woodpecker, wood duck, eastern screech-owl, and barred owl cavities.

Lepidoptera — the host of hosts

The hickory genus (Carya) hosts more than 200 species of moths and butterflies in eastern North America — among the very highest of any tree genus. Notable for shagbark in NE Oklahoma: the spectacular luna moth (Actias luna), regal moth (Citheronia regalis) whose enormous "hickory horned devil" caterpillar is the largest in North America, the banded hairstreak butterfly (Satyrium calanus), and the imperial moth (Eacles imperialis).

Pollinators & soil

Wind-pollinated, so flowers are not a pollinator nectar source — but catkin pollen is heavily harvested by honey bees and native bees in early spring. Hickory leaf litter is rich in calcium and decomposes to a well-structured forest-floor humus that supports the diverse spring ephemeral wildflowers (trillium, trout lily, mayapple) of the Ozark cove forests.

Plant for grandchildren: A shagbark planted today as a 24" seedling may take 40–60 years to bear its first significant nut crop and 150 years to develop the full shaggy-bark character. This is precisely the kind of tree the Cross Timbers and Ozark forests need more of, and precisely the opposite of fast-growth landscape priorities. If you have the space and the patience, plant one.
Hickory bark beetle & mortality: The native hickory bark beetle (Scolytus quadrispinosus) attacks drought-stressed and wind-damaged trees, and is a leading cause of mature-hickory mortality in the southern Plains during prolonged droughts (notably the 2011–2012 OK drought killed many mature hickories). Maintain tree vigor, avoid construction damage to roots, and remove and burn or chip infested wood promptly.

When to plant intentionally

Shagbark belongs in any NE Oklahoma site with deep soil, room for a 60–80 ft tree, and an owner with a long view: large rural properties, restoration plantings, oak-hickory replanting projects, multi-acre wildlife plantings, naturalized parks, school nature areas. It does not belong in tight residential lots, near foundations, near septic lines (the deep taproot), in compacted urban soils, or in alkaline limestone soils common in west Tulsa and Sand Springs.

Pruning

Minimal pruning — remove only dead, damaged or crossing branches in late winter. Allow the natural straight central leader and narrow oblong crown to develop. Do not top a hickory; the wood resprouts poorly and the tree never recovers its form. Avoid pruning in spring after sap rises through summer (Juglandaceae bleed heavily).

Shagbark has been minimally bred. A small number of named cultivars selected for improved nut size, thinner shells, or earlier bearing exist primarily in the northern nut-growing community:

For an ecological planting, prefer seedlings from local seed over named cultivars. For a small backyard nut crop, a grafted named cultivar on a seedling rootstock will bear sooner.

Shagbark hickory is one of the most important utility trees of eastern North America. Both the nut and the wood have been continuously used for over 10,000 years.
