Sassafras

Sassafras albidum

Sassafras is the genus that broke the rule that "every leaf on a branch looks the same." On a single twig you will find three different leaf shapes at once — a simple oval, a two-lobed mitten, and a three-lobed trident — an arrangement found in only a handful of woody plants worldwide. Crush a twig or a leaf and the wood gives off a sweet, spicy, distinctly American aroma: this is the tree whose root bark flavored the original root beer and the file´ powder of Louisiana gumbos. In NE Oklahoma it lives at the western edge of its range, scattered through the Ozark and Ouachita uplands and the eastern Cross Timbers, where it produces some of the most spectacular fall color — molten orange, scarlet, salmon and gold — of any native tree.

Identification

Habit & Bark

Small to medium tree with a distinctive open, layered, almost candelabra-like crown — the result of a sympodial branching pattern in which each year's lead shoot dies back and lateral buds take over, producing tiered horizontal layers of foliage. Mature trunks 12–30 in dbh, occasionally larger in deep Ozark coves. Bark is thick, deeply furrowed, reddish-brown to gray-brown with flat-topped ridges — on a freshly cut surface the inner bark and sapwood are pale yellow-orange and intensely fragrant. Forms extensive clonal thickets from root suckers around any parent tree.

Leaves — the three shapes

The diagnostic feature, found on every sassafras and on no other tree in the eastern US: three distinct leaf shapes occur together on the same branch:

  • Unlobed: simple ovate leaf, like a smooth elm.
  • Mitten: two-lobed, with a single lateral "thumb" — left-handed and right-handed mittens both occur.
  • Trident: three-lobed, with two equal lateral lobes and one central lobe.

All three forms are alternate, 3–6 in long, with smooth margins, soft texture, and a strong sweet citrus-spice aroma when crushed. Petioles and young twigs are bright yellow-green.

Flowers, Fruit & Sex

Dioecious: male and female flowers on separate trees. In March–April, before leaf-out, both sexes produce small bright yellow-green flowers in 1–2 in racemes at the ends of twigs — one of the earliest sources of nectar in the regional spring. Female trees follow with dark blue, ovoid drupes (~10 mm) held on bright scarlet pedicels in a small cup, ripening in late summer and stripped quickly by birds. The combination of blue fruit on red stem is unmistakable.

Fall Color & Confusables

Fall color in NE Oklahoma is among the most spectacular of any native tree: a single canopy can show yellow, orange, salmon, scarlet and burgundy at once, often peaking late October to early November. Confusable in winter only with red mulberry, but mulberry has no aromatic bark. The leaf shapes are unmistakable in the growing season — if you find a tree with three leaf shapes and a sweet citrus-spice smell, it is sassafras. Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) is the closest aromatic Lauraceae relative in our region but is a small shrub with single-shaped elliptic leaves.

Habitat & Range in NE Oklahoma

Sassafras reaches its western range limit in eastern Oklahoma. It is common in the Ozark Highlands of Adair, Cherokee, Delaware and Sequoyah counties, common in the Ouachita Mountains of Le Flore and McCurtain counties, scattered through the eastern Cross Timbers from Tulsa east, and effectively absent from the western half of the state where soil pH and drought exceed its tolerance. In the Tulsa metro itself it is uncommon as a wild tree but plants well on the slightly acidic sandstone soils of the Osage Hills, the Tulsa University area, and the Arkansas River bluffs.

Ecologically, sassafras is a pioneer / mid-successional species that colonizes old fields, fence rows, fire-disturbed uplands, and timber clearings on acidic, well-drained, sandy or chert soils. It is highly shade-intolerant in the seedling stage but will hold a place in the mid-canopy of an oak-hickory forest for decades. Like persimmon, it spreads aggressively by root suckers, often forming pure clonal thickets from a single seed-grown parent — the entire grove may be genetically identical and all one sex. This clonal habit explains the otherwise puzzling pattern of dense fruiting groves adjacent to identical-looking groves with no fruit at all: those second groves are male.

Lepidoptera — the swallowtails

Sassafras and its sister-shrub spicebush are the obligate primary larval hosts of the spicebush swallowtail (Papilio troilus) — one of the most spectacular butterflies in eastern North America, whose green caterpillars with their disquieting "fake snake eyes" fold sassafras leaves into silk-lined nests. Also a primary host of the eastern tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) and the promethea moth (Callosamia promethea). Without sassafras and spicebush in our woodlands, two of our most charismatic butterflies cannot complete their life cycle.

Spring pollinators

The early-spring yellow racemes — opening before most other woody plants leaf out — are a critical first nectar source for emerging queen bumblebees, mining bees (Andrena), and small flies. Honey bees use them heavily where colonies overwinter. Bloom typically coincides with redbud and serviceberry across the eastern Cross Timbers.

Birds & Mammals

The lipid-rich blue drupes are taken by 30+ bird species during late summer and fall migration: wood thrush, gray catbird, northern flicker, pileated woodpecker, eastern kingbird, great crested flycatcher, eastern phoebe, scarlet and summer tanagers, rose-breasted grosbeak, and yellow-throated vireo. White-tailed deer browse twigs and seedlings heavily — in fact, deer pressure is one of the main checks on sassafras regeneration in eastern OK woodlands. Black bears (where they occur in the Ouachitas) consume the fruit.

Allelopathy & soil

Sassafras leaves and roots produce mild allelopathic compounds that suppress some understory competitors — a contributor to the species' tendency to form near-pure clonal thickets. The deep taproot helps cycle minerals from depth, and leaf litter is moderately rich in calcium and magnesium, contributing to soil-building on poor acidic upland sites.

Safrole — the FDA root-beer story: The aromatic compound safrole, which gives sassafras its distinctive scent, was banned by the US FDA from commercial food and beverage use in 1960 following rodent studies linking high doses to liver cancer. Modern commercial root beer is flavored with safrole-free sassafras extract or with synthetic substitutes. Casual home use (occasional tea from young roots) is not considered acutely dangerous, but should be limited; pregnant or nursing women and people with liver conditions should avoid it. Children should not consume it.
Sex & siting for fruit: Because sassafras is dioecious and spreads clonally, a single planted tree may never produce fruit. To establish a fruiting grove for wildlife, plant 3–5 seedlings from different seed sources spaced 20–30 ft apart and accept that you will not know the sex of each until they begin flowering at 6–10 years of age.

When to plant intentionally

Sassafras earns a place in any NE Oklahoma landscape that has the right soil and enough room. It is an outstanding small-to-medium native tree for naturalized borders, hedgerows, woodland edges, restoration plantings, and specimen use where you want fall-color drama. It does not belong in tight foundation plantings, in alkaline soils (much of the western Tulsa metro on limestone-derived clays), or where the suckering habit will become a maintenance problem.

Pruning & suckers

Prune lightly, in late winter, to remove crossing branches and shape the natural layered crown — do not over-prune the candelabra form. Root suckers will appear in a 10–20 ft radius around the parent tree; mow them to maintain a single specimen, or allow them to develop into a multi-trunked grove. Sassafras resprouts vigorously from the stump after damage.

Cultivars & sourcing

Sassafras is essentially never sold as named cultivars. Buy seedling stock from regional native-plant nurseries (Sunshine Nursery, Wild Things Nursery, the OSU Forestry Services Forest Regeneration Center, the Missouri Department of Conservation George O. White Nursery), or grow from locally collected seed (cold-stratify 90–120 days). For a fruiting grove, buy seedlings from at least two unrelated seed sources to ensure both sexes.

Cultural & Material Uses

Few American trees have so deep a cultural footprint. From pre-contact Indigenous medicine to colonial-era export, from Cajun cooking to the soft-drink aisle, sassafras has been continuously used for over 500 years.
