The rose-purple thimble bloom of the NE Oklahoma tallgrass prairie, purple prairie clover combines a deep nitrogen-fixing taproot, a spectacular pollinator-magnet flower, and a long-lived perennial habit in a single mid-height forb. Each cone-like flower head opens its tiny purple corollas in a slow ring from the bottom upward over a week, drawing native bees, honeybees, butterflies, and beneficial wasps in constant succession. A keystone forb of intact prairie remnants and a near-mandatory species in any quality NE Oklahoma prairie reconstruction.

Dense cylindrical to ovoid spike 1–2 in long, held terminally on a slender stem 1–3 ft tall. Individual flowers are tiny (5 mm), rose-purple, and open in a horizontal ring at the bottom of the spike, advancing upward over 7–14 days — producing the species' signature "purple-ring-on-green-cone" appearance during bloom. Below each open flower, the previously open ring fades to brown; above, unopened buds are silky-green. Bees work the open ring nonstop on warm days.
Alternate, pinnately compound with 3–7 narrow leaflets each 1/2–1 in long, glandular-dotted on the underside (visible with a hand lens as small clear or amber dots). Crushed foliage has a slight resinous-spicy smell. Stems wiry, smooth or finely pubescent, mostly unbranched until the inflorescence.
Tightly clumped multi-stemmed perennial 1–3 ft tall and about as wide; never spreads vegetatively. Below ground, a woody taproot extends 4–6 ft into mineral soil — comparable in depth to compass plant or leadplant — making mature plants effectively immovable but extremely long-lived and drought-resistant.
White prairie clover (Dalea candida) is nearly identical in habit and flower form but with white flowers; the two often grow side-by-side. Foxtail prairie clover (D. leporina) is annual, with a fluffier softer spike. Leadplant (Amorpha canescens) has a similar flower form but is a low silvery shrub with much smaller leaflets. True Trifolium clovers have round (not cylindrical) flower heads and three (not 3–7) leaflets.
Dalea purpurea is a tallgrass prairie indicator: its presence in any quantity tells you you are looking at a remnant prairie with intact native forb diversity rather than a degraded former pasture. It occurs across most of NE Oklahoma but is concentrated in the unbroken Osage Hills tallgrass: the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, the Joseph H. Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Pawhuska, the Black Mesa grasslands of Osage County, and on the dry uplands of Pawnee, Noble, and Kay counties.
The species favors well-drained loamy or rocky soils on upland prairie, savanna, and the open margins of the Cross Timbers. It tolerates the limestone-derived soils of the Flint Hills outliers, the sandstone-rocky soils of the Cross Timbers, and lean alluvium along the Arkansas River terraces. It does poorly on rich bottomlands where rank warm-season grass overtops it, and in heavily grazed or hayed pastures where cattle preferentially crop it out (it is highly palatable, more so than most prairie forbs).
Historically, the species was maintained at large populations by frequent fire (a 2–5 year return interval) and moderate, rotational bison grazing. Modern management for native populations involves prescribed burning and exclusion of season-long cattle grazing. In Tulsa-area gardens, an unburned planting on lean ground with annual late-winter mowing carries populations indefinitely.

Few prairie species support a more diverse insect visitor list: documented pollinators include 200+ native bee species across the genera Bombus, Melissodes, Megachile, Andrena, Halictus, Lasioglossum, plus honey bees, monarch butterflies, sulphurs, skippers, beneficial wasps, beetles, and syrphid flies. The open-ring flower architecture is universally accessible.
Like all legumes, purple prairie clover hosts nitrogen-fixing Bradyrhizobium bacteria in root nodules; these reduce atmospheric N₂ into ammonia in exchange for plant sugars. In intact tallgrass prairie, Dalea species are the primary native source of fixed nitrogen into the soil — a quiet but essential ecosystem service that distinguishes diverse remnants from monoculture grass plantings.
Larval host for several sulphur butterflies including the dogface sulphur (Zerene cesonia) and southern dogface (Z. cesonia), and the gray hairstreak (Strymon melinus). The small one-seeded fruits are eaten by bobwhite quail, prairie chickens, ground-feeding sparrows, and small rodents in autumn and winter.
Both bison and cattle preferentially graze purple prairie clover, and historic accounts describe the species as bison candy. Under continuous heavy season-long cattle grazing, populations decline within a decade. Under bison grazing — characterized by pulse use and long rests — populations are stable. This is the principal reason most modern Oklahoma rangeland has lost its prairie clover.
This is a conservation species. Despite being widespread, D. purpurea has retreated dramatically from former range under heavy grazing and tillage. Including it in NE Oklahoma garden and restoration plantings is a small contribution to its regional persistence — choose locally adapted seed where available.

Plant container-grown stock March through May. Direct-sow seed in late autumn (Nov–Dec) for natural cold stratification and germination with the first warm spring rains. Avoid transplanting established plants — the long taproot rarely survives the move.
Include Dalea purpurea in any NE Oklahoma prairie reconstruction at 1/4–1 lb PLS/ac as part of a diverse forb component. The species is slow to establish and may not appear in measurable cover until year 3, but persists for decades thereafter. Pair with D. candida (white prairie clover) and Amorpha canescens (leadplant) for a complete native legume suite.

From seed: seed has a hard coat and benefits from scarification (sandpaper or 30-minute soak in hot water) and 30 days of cold-moist stratification. Germination 60–90% with proper preparation, close to zero without. From division: not practical — taproot does not divide. From cuttings: rare and difficult.
Purple prairie clover has a substantial documented record across the Plains for both medicinal and food use, and is one of the most important species in modern prairie restoration and pollinator-conservation programs.
