Pole Bean

Phaseolus vulgaris

Pole-habit common beans — the climbing form of Phaseolus vulgaris — were domesticated in Mesoamerica roughly 8,000 years ago and reached the eastern woodlands well before European contact, where they became the second sister of the Indigenous corn-bean-squash polyculture. Most of the named heirlooms grown in NE Oklahoma kitchen gardens today — Kentucky Wonder, Cherokee Trail of Tears, Rattlesnake, Blue Lake — are pole types selected over centuries for a long picking season, deep flavor, and vertical land-use efficiency in the kind of small mixed-crop garden the Tulsa region has always favored.

Identification

Habit — pole vs bush

Pole-type P. vulgaris has an indeterminate twining apex that twists counter-clockwise (when viewed from above) around any vertical support, climbing 6–12 ft over the season. Bush types — selected for mechanical harvest — are determinate, reaching 18–24 in and producing a concentrated flush of pods. The two share genetics; pole habit is recessive.

Leaves & stipules

Compound leaves with three ovate leaflets 2–4 in long, the terminal leaflet on a longer petiolule. Stem and petioles often pubescent (lightly hairy). At each leaf base sit small persistent stipules. The growth pattern is helical: leaves spiral up the climbing stem at roughly 137° intervals.

Flowers & pods

Typical legume "papilionaceous" flowers in axillary racemes: banner, two wings, and a coiled keel; color varies by cultivar (white, lilac, lavender, deep pink, dark red). Flowers are largely self-pollinating before opening — outcrossing is well under 5% in most settings — which is why pole-bean varieties breed true from saved seed for generations. Pods are pendant, slender, fleshy, 4–8 in long, ripening from green to yellow to dry tan.

Confusables

Runner bean (Phaseolus coccinatus) has larger, bright-red flowers, fatter rough pods, and is a perennial in its native highlands (annual here). Lima bean (P. lunatus) has flatter, kidney-shaped seeds and the pods are short and broad. Cowpea / black-eyed pea (Vigna unguiculata) is a different genus altogether with longer snake-like pods. Yard-long bean (Vigna unguiculata ssp. sesquipedalis) is also a Vigna.

Habitat & Range in NE Oklahoma

Common bean is a cultivated species, not a wild plant of NE Oklahoma — but its history in the region goes back at least 600 years. Pre-removal Cherokee, Osage, Quapaw, Wichita, and Caddo communities all grew pole-type beans as part of the corn-bean-squash polyculture, and the variety now known as Cherokee Trail of Tears was carried by Cherokee families on the forced 1838–1839 march from the southern Appalachians into what is now eastern Oklahoma.

The Tulsa-region growing season — last frost mid-April, first frost late-October — is a near-perfect 180-day window for pole beans. The chief hazards are (1) early-summer drought and crusting heavy clay soil, which suppresses germination; (2) the brutal mid-July heat that shuts down flower set above ~92°F nighttime temperatures; and (3) the late-summer flush of Mexican bean beetles. A second succession sown in early July generally bears through October.

Soils across Tulsa County, Wagoner, Rogers, and Mayes vary from deep alluvial loams along the Verdigris and Caney to heavier red Permian clays on the uplands — both grow good beans with attention to drainage.

Nitrogen fixation

Bean roots host Rhizobium phaseoli bacteria in pink-centered nodules along the laterals; the bacteria reduce atmospheric N₂ into ammonia in exchange for plant sugars. A vigorous pole-bean stand fixes roughly 40–60 lb of nitrogen per acre per season; most is held in the plant tissue, not released to the soil, but cutting plants at the base in fall and letting roots decay in place credits significant N to the next crop.

Three Sisters polyculture

The classic Indigenous polyculture pairs maize (cornstalk as living trellis), climbing bean (nitrogen donor & protein crop), and squash (broad leaves as living mulch and pest deterrent). All three were independently domesticated in Mesoamerica and moved north together. The triad is the most robust pre-industrial cropping system documented in eastern North America — and a fine pattern for a Tulsa kitchen garden if corn is direct-sown 2–3 weeks before the beans.

Pollinators

Common bean is largely self-pollinating, but bumblebees (Bombus) and the occasional honey bee work the flowers for nectar and improve pod set marginally. Long-tongued cultivars such as 'Scarlet Runner' (separate species) attract hummingbirds; P. vulgaris flowers are not a notable wildlife resource.

Pests & diseases

The dominant NE Oklahoma pest is the Mexican bean beetle (Epilachna varivestis) — a yellow lady-beetle look-alike whose spiny yellow larvae skeletonize leaves in July–August. Hand pick, encourage parasitoid wasps (Pediobius foveolatus), or plant a trap crop of bush snap beans to draw the first generation. Other pests: spider mites in dry weather, bean leaf beetle, and squash bugs (when grown in the Three Sisters).

Inoculate at sowing if this is the first bean crop on the site. A nickel-sized scoop of legume-specific Rhizobium inoculant dusted into the seed furrow will establish nodules on the first roots and roughly double biomass by mid-July. Inoculant is unnecessary if beans have grown in the same soil within the last three years.

When to sow

Direct-sow when soil temperature exceeds 60°F — in Tulsa, typically late April to early May. Beans rot in cold wet soil; an early sowing into 55°F mud usually fails. For continuous picking, sow a second succession in late June or early July for a fall crop that comes in after the heat breaks.

Pick green snap pods every 2–3 days when pods are pencil-thick and the seeds are still small bumps inside. Frequent picking signals the plant to keep flowering — missed pods that mature to seed shut down further bloom. Snap pods are best eaten same-day or refrigerated up to a week. For dry beans, leave pods on the vine until they are tan and rattling, then strip the whole vine and dry indoors before threshing.

Seed saving

Common bean is largely self-pollinating, so saved seed comes true with minimal isolation. Let pods dry on the vine until tan and brittle, strip into a paper bag, and freeze 48 hours to kill bean weevils before storage. Properly dried seed remains viable 3–4 years; longer if frozen.

Cultural & Material Uses

Phaseolus vulgaris is one of the four most economically important food legumes worldwide (after soybean, peanut, and chickpea), and a cornerstone staple of the Indigenous food systems of the Americas. The pole habit is the ancestral form; bush types are a relatively recent (<200 year) selection for mechanical harvest.
