Coreopsis tinctoria

The yellow-and-mahogany ray flower that turns Oklahoma road shoulders gold every June, plains coreopsis is the only widely native annual coreopsis on the Great Plains. A single plant easily produces several hundred seeds, and a fall-shed cohort germinates the following spring as a dense self-sowing carpet. Indispensable for first-year prairie restorations, naturalized roadsides, pollinator strips, and any NE Oklahoma planting that needs reliable color while perennials establish in the background.

Ray florets — the giveaway

Composite head 1–1.5 in across with 8 yellow ray florets, each with a sharply defined dark-red to mahogany base forming a ring around a small reddish-brown disk. The two-tone ring is distinctive in our flora: no other Oklahoma Coreopsis has the bicolor ray. Some populations and cultivars are entirely mahogany or pure yellow; in restoration plantings expect a range.

Habit & foliage

Slender, smooth, much-branched annual 2–4 ft tall, the stem glabrous (hairless) and often glaucous-blue. Leaves opposite, twice-pinnately divided into thread-like segments 1–2 mm wide, giving the whole plant a finely-fringed, almost cosmos-like texture. Lower leaves long-petioled; upper leaves sessile. The foliage feels almost weightless.

Phyllaries & fruit

Two whorls of phyllaries (involucral bracts) at the base of the head: an inner row of broad, papery-margined yellowish bracts and an outer row of small, narrow, green bracts — a Coreopsis hallmark. Achenes (one-seeded fruits) are dark, oblong, 2–3 mm, lacking the pappus bristles of true sunflowers. Goldfinches strip mature heads with surgical precision in late summer.

Confusables

The perennial lance-leaved coreopsis (C. lanceolata) has solid yellow rays, simple lance-shaped leaves, and rebloom from a basal rosette. Threadleaf coreopsis (C. verticillata) is also a perennial with solid yellow rays and whorled leaves. Cosmos sulphureus has similar bicolor coloring but ray florets are notched at the tip and stems are coarser. C. tinctoria is the only widespread NE Oklahoma coreopsis that completes its life cycle in a single season.

Habitat & Range in NE Oklahoma

Coreopsis tinctoria is native across most of the Great Plains and is documented in nearly every county of Oklahoma. In NE Oklahoma it is everywhere: roadsides, ditch margins, abandoned fields, the wet bottomlands along the Verdigris and Caney rivers, the sandy disturbed soils of the Cross Timbers, the burnt-over corners of the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Osage County, and any vacant lot in Tulsa that has been mown once in May.

The species is a floodplain and disturbance specialist: it colonizes scoured riverbanks, recently-tilled soil, and bare patches in grassland faster than almost any other native annual. ODOT and county road crews have used coreopsis in their wildflower seed mixes for decades, which is why northbound I-44 between Tulsa and Bartlesville turns into a coreopsis corridor each June. Outside human management, the natural population centers are along the Arkansas River, the Cimarron, and the Salt Fork.

It tolerates the heavy red-clay soils of the Tulsa basin, the deep sands of the Sand Springs terrace, and the shallow rocky soils of the Ozark fringe with equal ease. The single requirement is full sun — coreopsis is intolerant of shade and disappears within two years of canopy closure.

Pollinators

Open, shallow flower architecture makes coreopsis accessible to a wide range of short-tongued bees, syrphid (hover) flies, small butterflies, soldier beetles, and beneficial wasps. It is not a specialist plant for any single pollinator but is one of the most productive midsummer nectar & pollen sources in mixed prairie plantings, supporting Halictus, Lasioglossum, and Megachile bees in particular.

Goldfinch food source

The American goldfinch (Spinus tristis) times its breeding to August–September specifically to coincide with the seed set of composites — coreopsis, sunflower, thistle. A patch of plains coreopsis left to mature seed will be stripped by goldfinches over a two-week period in September; you can stand within 10 ft and watch them work.

Restoration cover crop

In NE Oklahoma prairie reconstructions, coreopsis is sown at 1–3 lb/ac as a first-year nurse crop: it germinates within 10 days of spring rains, blooms within 90 days, suppresses weeds, and shades the soil while slower-establishing perennial grasses (Schizachyrium, Andropogon, Sporobolus) develop. By year three the perennials dominate and coreopsis recedes to scattered patches in disturbed gaps.

Allergen-free, pet-safe, deer-resistant

Coreopsis pollen is heavy and insect-distributed (no airborne allergy); foliage is non-toxic to cats, dogs, and livestock; and the bitter sap causes deer to bypass it in favor of softer forbs. One of the safest natives for high-traffic landscape plantings.

To get the meadow look, do less. Sow seed in fall onto scratched soil, and then leave it alone. Mowing in early spring before germination is fine; mowing or fertilizing during the growing season collapses both bloom and self-sowing.

When to sow intentionally

Two windows work in NE Oklahoma. Late fall (Nov–Dec) after a killing frost is the natural pattern: seed lies on the soil, weathers, and germinates with the first warm spring rain. Early spring (Feb–March) direct-sow also works; cold stratification is helpful but not strictly required.

Deadheading & rebloom

Coreopsis blooms June through September if spent heads are removed weekly. Allow at least the last cycle in late August/September to mature into seed — this both feeds goldfinches and reseeds next year's stand. Total unmanaged self-sowing typically holds the stand for 5–10 years before perennials shade it out.

Containment in mixed beds

Coreopsis can dominate a small bed; rogue out unwanted seedlings in March and April when the seedlings are easy to identify by their feathery cotyledons. In larger meadow plantings, treat the spread as a feature.

Pests & diseases

Seed saving

When the seed heads turn brown and brittle, snip whole heads into a paper bag and dry indoors for two weeks. Crush gently and winnow chaff in a light breeze. Seeds remain viable 3–5 years in cool, dry storage; pack with a silica desiccant for longer life. A single mature plant produces 500–2,000 seeds.

Cultural & Material Uses

The species epithet tinctoria means "of the dyers" — a 17th–19th-century Linnaean signal that the plant was already in commercial use as a dye source when European botany got around to naming it. That history is documented from before the Lewis & Clark expedition, when the Apsáalooke (Crow), Tewa, and other Plains peoples used the boiled flower heads to dye porcupine quills, wool, and rawhide gold and red-brown.
