A finely textured, almost grass-like, square-stemmed mint with narrow needle-thin leaves and clusters of small white flowers spotted with purple, native to prairie edges and open woodlands across NE Oklahoma. It is famous in eastern US pollinator research as the species that consistently attracts the greatest diversity and abundance of beneficial insects in multi-year trials — including the Penn State Extension and Mt. Cuba Center pollinator-plant trials, where Pycnanthemum species routinely top the rankings. The bonus: it is one of the few native mints that does not spread aggressively by rhizome.

A finely textured, upright perennial 1.5–3 ft tall, with densely branched stems giving the plant an airy, almost coniferous silhouette in mid-summer. Stems are square in cross-section (definitive Lamiaceae family character) and smooth. Leaves are opposite, very narrow (1–2 mm wide), linear, and almost grass-like — the narrowest leaves of any Pycnanthemum species, the source of both the species epithet (tenuifolium = "slender-leaved") and the common name. The plant has a distinctive fine-textured presence that contrasts beautifully with broader-leaved perennials.
Flowers are small (3–5 mm), white, with two lips spotted lavender to purple inside the throat, packed into dense flat-topped terminal clusters 1–2 in across at the tips of every branch. Each cluster is subtended by distinctive silvery-white bracts that give the entire flowering plant a frosted, slightly luminous look on a sunny day — like the whole plant has been powdered with confectioner's sugar. Bloom begins in mid-June and continues through September with peak display in July–August.
A diagnostic feature: crush a leaf and the air fills with a strong, clean, true peppermint-spearmint fragrance from the volatile menthol-like terpenes (mostly pulegone, menthone, limonene). The scent is so characteristic that you can identify the plant blindfolded once you know it. The smell is concentrated in the leaves and flowering tops; the dried plant retains it well.
Several other Pycnanthemum species occur in NE Oklahoma: P. albescens (whiteleaf mountain mint) has broader, hairy, gray-green leaves; P. virginianum has wider lance-shaped leaves and is more strongly rhizomatous; P. pilosum (hairy mountain mint) is coarser and densely hairy. The Eurasian garden Mentha species are almost always more aggressively spreading and have wider, often ovate leaves. Slender Mountain Mint is the species with truly needle-thin leaves and a tight clumping habit.
Pycnanthemum tenuifolium is genuinely common across NE Oklahoma in open prairie remnants, savanna openings, oak woodland edges, glade margins, and upland old fields — essentially any sunny to part-shade site with average to dry well-drained soil. It is a regular component of remnant tallgrass prairie at Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Osage County, of the cross-timbers savanna at Joseph H. Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve and Pawhuska-area state lands, and of glade and barrens communities throughout the western Ozarks of Cherokee, Adair and Mayes counties.
Soil tolerance is broad: it grows on the rocky chert and sandstone ridges of the Cross Timbers, the calcareous limestone of the Osage hills, the deep loams of recovering pasture, and the sandy alluvium of upper terraces along the Verdigris and Caney rivers. The one site type it largely avoids is permanently wet bottomland — mountain mint wants its feet drained between rains. Historically it tolerated and probably benefited from frequent grass-fueled prairie fire on a 1–5 year rotation; the plant resprouts vigorously from its modest rhizome system after top-killing fire.
In a Tulsa garden setting it is one of the easiest natives to establish and maintain. It thrives in average garden soil, in both formal beds and naturalistic prairie plantings, and its airy form and long bloom window make it visually compatible with almost any other native or non-invasive ornamental.

Slender Mountain Mint and its congeners (P. muticum, P. virginianum) consistently rank at the very top of multi-year pollinator-plant trials in the eastern US. The Penn State Extension pollinator garden trial documented over 75 species of bees, wasps, flies, butterflies, moths and beetles visiting P. muticum in a single growing season, more than any other plant tested. Mt. Cuba Center's Pycnanthemum trial likewise put mountain mints at the top of their pollinator-attractiveness rankings. P. tenuifolium is one of the recommended trial species, particularly valued for its long bloom and accessibility to small-bodied insects.
Three traits combine: shallow open flowers accessible to short-tongued bees, wasps, flies and beetles; copious nectar in small per-flower amounts (so one plant supports a whole community rather than monopolizing a few large pollinators); and a long uninterrupted bloom window from mid-June through September. The result is exceptional diversity rather than a few high-value visits, which is the metric that matters most for ecosystem function.
Mountain mint is one of the best-known plants for supporting predatory and parasitoid wasps — the spider wasps, mud daubers, thread-waisted wasps, and tiny parasitoid wasps that are the natural pest-control workforce of any garden. Adult wasps need nectar; their larvae feed on caterpillars, aphids and other pest insects. A row of mountain mint adjacent to a vegetable garden is one of the most cost-effective "beneficial insectary" plantings available in the regional native palette.
The strong volatile mint oils make mountain mint reliably deer-resistant — one of the most browse-proof natives in the Tulsa region. Seed production is modest; the small nutlets are not particularly valuable to seed-eating birds, but mountain mint reseeds quietly into compatible meadow plantings and spreads slowly by short rhizome to form long-lived clumps that gradually expand over many years.

Slender Mountain Mint is the right plant for: pollinator gardens and meadow plantings, beneficial-insect insectary strips at the edge of vegetable gardens or orchards, fine-textured contrast in mixed perennial beds, prairie restorations and savanna plantings, and low-maintenance native borders. It is one of very few "rule the world" native pollinator plants that works in essentially any sunny to part-shade site.
For a denser, shorter, more compact form, pinch the growing tips back by half in late May or early June (the "Chelsea chop" technique). The plants will branch aggressively, stay shorter and more upright, and bloom slightly later but more profusely. Unpinched plants reach their full 2–3 ft height and tend to lean outward in heavy rain.
Cut back to the ground in late winter (February). The plant tolerates and arguably benefits from periodic dormant-season burning in larger meadow plantings. Established clumps slowly expand by short rhizome — if you want to limit spread, divide every 4–5 years in early spring and replant the outer wedges. Otherwise, mountain mint is essentially zero- maintenance once established.
Division in early spring is the easiest and most reliable method. Lift a clump, slice into 4–6 wedges with a sharp spade, and replant the rhizome-bearing pieces. Stem cuttings taken in late spring root readily in a moist medium under light shade. Seed is also possible: mature seedheads collected in October, cold-moist stratified for 30 days, and surface-sown into pots in early spring germinate within 2–3 weeks. Seed is fine and dust-like; don't bury it.
