The whimsical, durable, almost-cartoonish prairie composite that bobs along roadsides, fence rows and disturbed prairie across NE Oklahoma from late May into September. Each flowerhead is a tall brown columnar disc ringed at the base by a few drooping ray florets — bright yellow, mahogany-red, or a parti-colored bicolor — producing the unmistakable Mexican-sombrero silhouette that gives the species its name. Deep-rooted, drought-proof, deer-resistant, butterfly-friendly and reseeding willingly without ever becoming a problem, it is one of the easiest native perennials to establish in a Tulsa-area meadow, pollinator garden, or prairie restoration.

A wiry, upright, much-branched perennial 1–3 ft tall, growing from a stout woody crown and a long taproot. Stems are slender, grooved, gray-green and roughened with short stiff hairs. Leaves are pinnately divided into 5–9 narrow linear segments, alternate, gray-green and somewhat sparse along the upper stem. The whole plant has a characteristic open, airy, slightly straggly look that reads instantly as "prairie composite" even before it blooms.
The diagnostic feature: each flowerhead has a tall, columnar, oblong-cylindrical brown disc 1–2 in tall (much longer than wide) ringed at the very base by 3–7 widely spaced, drooping ray florets each 1–2 in long. Rays are usually pure yellow, but mahogany-red and bicolor (red with yellow tips) forms are common and often grow mixed in the same prairie population. The disc itself opens flowers from the bottom up over several weeks — when you crush a fresh disc it has a faint anise-like fragrance.
Mexican Hat develops a deep, unbranched taproot that descends rapidly through cracked limestone and shallow sandstone soils, reaching subsoil moisture inaccessible to shallower-rooted ornamentals. This is why it survives Oklahoma summers without irrigation and why mature plants resent transplanting — the taproot snaps and the plant rarely recovers. Best to direct-seed or set out small plug-grown stock.
Easily confused with the smaller, shorter-disc Ratibida pinnata (gray-headed or yellow coneflower, also native to eastern Oklahoma) which has a much shorter, gray-green disc and drooping yellow rays only. Echinacea spp. have a single central cone, purplish disc florets, and rays of one color per head. Rudbeckia hirta (black-eyed Susan) has a flatter, button-like disc and stiffer, non-drooping rays. Mexican Hat is the only common prairie composite with a tall cylindrical disc and reflexed rays.
Ratibida columnifera is one of the most reliably occurring native forbs across NE Oklahoma. It thrives on the lean, well-drained, calcareous and sandstone-derived soils of the Cross Timbers and the western edge of the tallgrass prairie, and is especially abundant on the limestone glades and mowed roadsides of Osage and Pawnee counties. ODOT-mowed shoulders along US-60, US-64 and US-75 north of Tulsa become a long ribbon of yellow-and-red Mexican Hat in June, alongside black-eyed Susan, Indian blanket and yellow coreopsis.
It is a classic pioneer species of disturbed prairie: common on overgrazed pasture remnants, in old fields recovering from cultivation, on construction-disturbance sites, in abandoned quarries, and in burned-over rangeland during the first 2–5 years after prescribed fire. Once a closed late-successional grass canopy (big bluestem, Indiangrass, switchgrass) shades the soil surface, Mexican Hat declines and persists mainly in canopy gaps and along edges — a normal successional pattern, not a failure.
It tolerates the full range of regional soils provided drainage is adequate: rocky chert ridges, sandstone outcrops, alkaline limestone of the Osage hills, deep loess, calcareous clay loam, and sandy alluvium. The one thing it will not tolerate is standing water or heavy clay with poor drainage — bottomland sites, lawn irrigation zones, and poorly drained urban soils kill it quickly.

The long bloom window (May–September) supports a long succession of pollinators. Small to mid-sized native bees (Halictus, Lasioglossum, Melissodes, leafcutter bees) work the disc florets continuously, and small butterflies (skippers, hairstreaks, painted ladies) and soldier beetles use the flat ray landing pads. Mexican Hat is not a top-tier specialist plant, but its sheer abundance and long season make it one of the most consistently productive nectar sources on the western Cross Timbers.
The cylindrical disc matures into a chaffy seed head packed with small dark seeds through autumn. American goldfinches, lesser goldfinches, and house finches strip the standing seed heads through fall and winter; small mammals (deer mice, harvest mice) collect fallen seed. Leaving seed heads standing through winter both feeds wildlife and ensures natural reseeding for next year.
The deep taproot, gray-green pubescent foliage, and tough cellular structure make Mexican Hat one of the most drought- resilient prairie forbs in the region. During the 2011–2012 Oklahoma flash drought, Mexican Hat populations on Osage County rangeland continued to bloom and set seed while shallower-rooted species died back. It is one of the species you want as a resilience anchor in any low-input prairie restoration.
Mexican Hat is rated as fair forage value for cattle and is occasionally browsed by deer when more palatable forbs are unavailable. It is generally not preferred — the foliage is bitter and slightly aromatic — which means Mexican Hat tends to increase on overgrazed pasture as more palatable species are eaten down. Old-time range managers used Mexican Hat abundance as a rough indicator of past overgrazing.

Mexican Hat is the right plant for: dry sunny meadows, roadside and parking-strip plantings, rock gardens and dry-stack-wall pockets, drought-tolerant pollinator beds, and prairie restorations on rocky or thin soils where richer-soil natives struggle. Avoid it in irrigated lawn-edge beds or wet bottomland gardens — it will rot within a season.
Cut the entire planting back to 4–6 in in late winter (February–early March) before new growth begins. Prescribed burn on a 2–4 year rotation is the ecologically appropriate maintenance for larger meadow plantings; mowing achieves a similar structural effect. Do not deadhead during the season — the long disc rebounds quickly with new flowers, and the seed crop feeds birds. If you want to limit self-sowing in a tight garden bed, cut spent flower stems before the discs fully ripen.

Mexican Hat is primarily an ornamental and ecological species today, but it has a small documented record of Indigenous and pioneer use as a beverage and dye plant.
