Leadplant

Amorpha canescens

Leadplant is a small (2–3 ft) silver-grey-leaved nitrogen-fixing sub-shrub of the original tallgrass prairie — a species that historically defined intact, undisturbed prairie. Its densely silvered compound foliage and tall slender purple-violet flower spikes (with bright orange anthers) make it one of the most visually distinct natives of the southern plains. Its 6–15 ft deep taproot — and its sensitivity to plowing — means that where leadplant survives, the prairie has never been broken. A genuine prairie indicator, slow to establish, very long-lived, and beloved by serious prairie restorationists.

Foliage

Leadplant is most easily recognized by its densely silver-grey pubescent compound foliage (the species name canescens means “greyish-white”). Each leaf is pinnately compound with 13–47 small (~½ in) oblong leaflets, all coated in fine silver-white hairs giving the entire plant a soft grey-green to silver appearance — said by 19th-century prairie travelers to look as if “made of lead.” Hence the common name.

Stems & habit

Multiple woody stems rise 18–36 in tall from a persistent woody base. Stems are pubescent grey-brown and semi-woody — the upper third typically dies back each winter and re-grows from the lower woody portion in spring. Crown is a tight single point — the plant does not run, sucker, or spread vegetatively, growing only from a deep central taproot.

Flowers

Flowers are tiny single-petaled (banner only) violet-purple blooms arranged in dense vertical spikes 2–6 in long at the stem tips, blooming from the base upward over 2–3 weeks in late June. Each tiny flower has a bright orange protruding anther — the contrast of orange anthers against the purple spike is the diagnostic visual feature and unmistakable in the field. Unlike most legumes, only one of the standard 5 petals is developed.

Fruit & lookalikes

Fruit is a small (~¼ in) curved single-seeded pod, gland- dotted, persisting through winter. Lookalikes: Indigobush (Amorpha fruticosa) is much larger (6–15 ft), fully woody, riparian/floodplain habit, with green (not silver) foliage; fragrant false-indigo (A. nana) is smaller (under 2 ft) with fewer leaflets and is rare in OK. Silver foliage plus purple-spike-with-orange-anthers plus prairie habitat = leadplant.

Habitat & Range in NE Oklahoma

Amorpha canescens is native to NE Oklahoma but increasingly local and uncommon — found wild only on intact unbroken tallgrass-prairie remnants, prairie hilltops, sandstone glades, dry calcareous bluffs, and railroad-prairie strips. The species is essentially absent from any ground that has ever been plowed; the deep taproot is destroyed by tillage and does not regenerate from seed bank in farmed land. The Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Osage County, the Joseph H. Williams Tallgrass Prairie, and the unplowed shale-glade hills around Pawhuska are the strongest NE Oklahoma populations.

Where it does occur, leadplant is a prairie indicator species — ecologists use its presence to identify intact, never-broken prairie. Where leadplant grows, the prairie soil community is intact: deep root systems, mycorrhizal networks, nitrogen-fixing rhizobia, and the broader assemblage of specialist prairie wildflowers. Its loss across most of the historical Great Plains range — through plowing, fire-suppression, and overgrazing — is one of the great untold ecological losses of North America.

Pollinators

The dense flower spikes are heavily visited during their short bloom window by native bumblebees (Bombus pensylvanicus, B. griseocollis, B. fervidus), leafcutter bees (Megachile), and the specialist Amorpha pollen-bee Colletes wilmattae. Honeybees work the spikes vigorously. The exposed orange anthers are a clear landing-target signal.

Larval host plant

Leadplant is the primary larval host for the silver-spotted skipper (Epargyreus clarus), the southern dogface sulfur (Zerene cesonia), the marine blue (Leptotes marina), and the hoary edge (Achalarus lyciades). Its loss across the Great Plains has contributed to the decline of all four species in the Oklahoma/Kansas/Nebraska prairie region.

Nitrogen fixation

A true nitrogen-fixing legume — nodulated by Bradyrhizobium bacteria, leadplant fixes 50–100 kg N/ha per year on intact prairie soil. Unlike honey-locust and Kentucky coffeetree (legumes that have largely lost the trait), leadplant is a real soil-fertility builder. This ecological function is part of why the species was historically abundant in the deep-soil tallgrass region.

Deep taproot

The 6–15 ft taproot is the most striking feature of the species: it can reach water tables 10+ ft below the surface, lets the plant survive multi-year drought, and lets it re-sprout after prairie fire from a fire-protected root crown. The same taproot makes it almost impossible to transplant from the wild and slow to establish from seed (years 1–3 are mostly underground growth).

Fire ecology: Leadplant evolved with prairie fire and tolerates burns well from its deep root crown. Top growth is consumed but the plant resprouts vigorously the same growing season. Contemporary prescribed-burn prairies (Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, Wah-Sha-She prairie) maintain robust leadplant populations through 3–5-year burn rotations.
Grazing-sensitive: Cattle preferentially graze leadplant (it's highly palatable and protein-rich), and overgrazing eliminates it from pastures within a few years. Its absence from historically grazed sections of the Flint Hills and Osage Hills is one of the best indicators of past grazing pressure. Light, rotational grazing can be tolerated; heavy continuous grazing cannot.

When to plant intentionally

Leadplant is the right plant for: serious prairie restorations, native wildflower meadows, dry sunny banks, butterfly gardens (especially for sulfurs and skippers), low-water dry borders, and deep-soil pollinator plantings. Avoid: poorly-drained clay, irrigated turf-edge plantings, shaded spots, and any site that will be regularly disturbed by tillage. This is a long-lived (50+ year) plant for permanent placement.

Care after establishment

Once established, leadplant is functionally maintenance-free. Cut dead woody top-growth back to ~6 in tall in late winter (Feb). Burn or mow once every 3–5 years if part of a prairie restoration; this maintains vigor and discourages encroaching woody species. Do not divide or transplant established plants — the taproot is uncuttable and the plant will die.
