Lance-Leaf Coreopsis is the most reliable, easy, and widely-available native yellow daisy of the southern plains — a tough, drought-tolerant 1–2 ft prairie perennial that opens its bright golden-yellow ray flowers in mid-May and continues, with deadheading, into early July. Found wild across nearly every county in eastern Oklahoma, it is the foundation perennial of countless NE Oklahoma pollinator gardens, roadside seed mixes, and ODOT wildflower plantings. Genuine, easy, native, and butter-yellow.

Identification

Basal rosette & habit

A short clumping perennial with a persistent basal rosette of narrow, lance-shaped leaves 2–6 in long with long-tapering bases (the diagnostic feature, and the source of both the species name lanceolata and the common name “lance-leaf”). Flowering stems rise 12–24 in tall from the rosette, branching only at the top to bear 1–3 flower heads each. Multiple flowering stems give a tidy, well-shaped clump.

Stem leaves

Stem leaves are opposite, much smaller, and mostly confined to the lower half of the stem — a clean separation from the similar threadleaf coreopsis (C. verticillata) which has whorls of fine thread-like leaves all up and down the stem, and from C. tinctoria (plains coreopsis, an annual) which has heavily leafy stems.

Flowers

Each flower head is 1.5–2 in across with 8 bright golden-yellow ray florets, each ray notched into 3–4 teeth at the tip (another diagnostic feature). Disk florets are yellow-orange to brown-yellow. Bloom begins in mid-May in NE Oklahoma and continues 6–8 weeks naturally; with deadheading the plant will rebloom intermittently into early July, and on cool wet summers occasionally throw a small fall flush.

Seed & lookalikes

Seeds are flat, dark-brown, oblong achenes ~¼ in long — the source of the alternate common name “tickseed” (the seeds resemble small ticks). Lookalikes: C. tinctoria (plains coreopsis) is an annual with red-brown disk centers; C. grandiflora (large-flower coreopsis) has slightly larger flowers with longer-stemmed leaves on the stem; C. verticillata has whorled threadlike foliage. C. lanceolata is the basic, standard, perennial species.

Habitat & Range in NE Oklahoma

Coreopsis lanceolata is one of the more common native perennial daisies in eastern Oklahoma, found wild on tallgrass-prairie remnants, sand prairies, sandstone glades, dry rocky bluffs, gravelly roadside right-of-way, and old-field/early-successional meadows across nearly every county from the Cross Timbers eastward. Particularly characteristic of the sandy and sandstone-derived soils of the south-Tulsa belt, the Sand-Springs hills, and the Salt-Plains region, where it forms attractive roadside displays in May.

The species is highly adaptable but most reliable on well-drained, low-fertility sandy or rocky soils in full sun. It tolerates clay if drainage is good but tends to be shorter-lived (3–5 years instead of 8–10) on heavy soils, where rust and crown rot eventually take it. On its preferred sandy substrate it can persist on the same patch of ground for decades and self-seed enough to maintain a colony indefinitely. NE Oklahoma roadside displays are largely seedling regeneration from year to year, not persistent individual plants.

Pollinators

A reliable workhorse rather than a specialist magnet. Visited heavily by small native bees including Ceratina (small carpenter), Halictus and Lasioglossum (sweat bees), Augochlora, Andrena, and the specialist coreopsis pollen-bee Melissodes coreopsis. Syrphid flower flies and small butterflies (skippers, sulfurs, hairstreaks, painted ladies) also visit. Honeybees use it as steady forage during the May–June peak.

Seed-eating birds

The flat “tickseed” achenes ripen in midsummer and are eagerly eaten by American goldfinch, indigo bunting, painted bunting, lesser goldfinch, and house finch. A coreopsis stand in early August can hold a small flock of finches working the seed heads. Leaving some heads to mature (instead of deadheading all of them) is the trade-off between extending bloom and feeding finches.

Larval hosts

Larval host plant for several Coreopsis-specialist micro-moths including the wavy-lined emerald (Synchlora aerata) which decorates itself with petal fragments for camouflage, and the common tan wave moth (Pleuroprucha insulsaria). These holes-in-leaves and petal-decorated caterpillars are part of the ecological footprint and should be tolerated.

Self-seeding behaviour

Coreopsis self-seeds readily in disturbed open soil, which is why it persists indefinitely on roadsides and in low-mow gravelly meadows. In a mulched, weed-controlled garden bed it self-seeds far less aggressively — the seeds need bare soil and light contact to germinate. Plan for this either way: in a meadow you'll get a self-maintaining colony; in a tidy bed you'll need to divide and replant every 4–6 years to keep populations vigorous.

Long-bloom strategy: If your goal is the longest possible bloom, deadhead aggressively (snip spent heads back to the next bud) every week from late May through June. If your goal is finch food and natural self-seeding, deadhead lightly through May and let the July seedheads ripen on the plant. Pick one strategy by zone of the garden — or split the difference by deadheading the front of the bed and leaving the back.
Allergenic pollen: Like most composites, coreopsis pollen can trigger seasonal allergies in sensitive individuals. Not a major contributor to regional pollen counts compared with grasses or ragweeds.

When to plant intentionally

Lance-leaf coreopsis is the right plant for: front-of-border perennial beds, sunny meadow plantings, prairie restorations, ODOT-style roadside plantings, native pollinator gardens, dry sunny slopes, gravel gardens, and low-maintenance mass plantings. Also outstanding in container gardens. Avoid heavy poorly-drained clay and dense shade; both shorten its life dramatically.

Deadheading & cutback

Deadhead aggressively for longest bloom — snip spent flower heads back to the next leaf node every 7–10 days from late May through late June. After the main bloom flush in early July, shear the entire plant back by half; this triggers fresh basal foliage and often a small late-summer rebloom. Cut back to ~3 in tall in late winter (Feb–early Mar) before new growth resumes.
